If anyone needs me and I seem to have dropped off the face of the earth, figure I'm either a) working or b) playing Atelier Iris. Because damn, but that game is turning out better than I thought it would.

(And then next month comes Harry Potter, and the next Kyoh Mara Maoh!, and the two Harvest Moon remakes for girls... hell, might as well just forget about this whole "life" and "seeing the sun" garbage right the hell now.)

Hi! I just came here via desdenova's journal, and immediately saw this post. I was just reading about "Atelier Iris" in the gamestop magazine, and they made it sound like a great old-school RPG. Is "better than I thought it would be" really good? How many Final Fantasys does it rate? ;-)

Hrmmmm. It's hard to compare it to Final Fantasies. ;) Have you ever played any of the Tales Of... games? Or Star Ocean 2 or 3? Those are what most quickly come to mind when thinking of how to describe the game. The combat system is totally different than those games though - it's turn-based.

In general it's a "pure" RPG, traditional in framework, with some pretty cool item creation systems and a bit of "collectivitis" as well. The combat system's nothing completely new and original, but not bad either. I've seen it described as character-driven rather than plot-driven, and I'd go along with that.

This is definitely more toward the humorous side of things though, even if the story itself can get serious.

If you need/want more specifics, let me know. ;)

Nope, that's good! It pretty much matches the magazine review, but I wasn't going to go just by that. I'm much more likely to trust friends of friends than random reviewers. =)

I'd started playing FFX-2 recently, since I never got anywhere in it before, but I'm not sure it's what I'm in the mood for. A nice classic RPG sounds better.
