Okay foodies...

Is pesto sauce supposed to look absolutely revolting?

I could give a better description, but... probably the least gross would be "a green oozy mess."

(Given that I'm also not loving the smell... um... I think dinner might need a radical last-minute rethink. At least I haven't cooked the spaghetti yet...)

Since I have none of that, I may decide to try some macaroni. Maybe I'll see if I can make a small small test batch and try it, but... yargh. I may just be a very non-pesto person, it turns out.

2 cups basil, 1/2 cup each of extra non-sexed olive oil and parmesan cheese (okay, I substituted a bit of grated cheddar for a little bit of that when I realized I didn't have quite enough), not quite 1/4 cup of mixed nuts (I didn't have pine nuts on hand, and recipes seemed to substitute various nuts for them anyhow fairly commonly), a dash of salt and pepper... oh, and 3 cloves of garlic.

Well, blender, but yes. (And yeah, I was just way lower on Parmesan than I thought! Blah.)

I don't know. I mean, it's not just a matter of "I don't like the smell much," it's actively making me feel ill doing things like, oh, washing out the preparation dishes. I thought I was a fan of all the ingredients which is why I decided to try it in the first place, but... I don't think I like basil nearly as much as I thought I did.

Pass, or at least until my stomach settles down, which considering it's just the smell and thought of the sauce that is doing it in the first place... well, I may just let others devour it. I think tonight will be leftovers, IF I get hungry again. -_-

Well, then again, the more I eat the less I have to give away!

Straight from the garden. As in, I was dodging bees to get enough for the sauce.

Well, I may give it a go tomorrow after some sleep puts some distance between me and the smell (and try to drizzle a bit onto some pasta without smelling it)...

If not though, I already have a destination for it, don't worry!

Well, it does smell pretty basilly, but it turns out that that much basil smell at once makes my stomach go "aaagh oh HELL no."

Which means I think I prefer the guinea pig solution, more than the buying more extra stuff solution.

Cheddar won't ruin a pesto. We make pesto semi-regularly here, and usually uses other flavourful quality cheeses in it, to no ill effect.

Yes.

If I may ask, without you giving the full blow by blow, what your pesto consists of?

Missing Oregano (a dash or two) and a tiny pinch of sugar.

Aside from that, looks normal to me.

Except for the mixed nuts. This make the sauce a bit more oily and/or bitter. Pine nuts are not true nuts - they're seeds.

I don't s'pose you took a picture so we could see how it turned out?

Re: a pesto fan says
Oh right, no, I didn't take any pics, sorry!
