Writer's Block: Young and driven

What is the legal drinking age where you live? Do you think it should be higher, lower, or remain the same, and why?

For some reason, I first read this as "driving age." Huh.

Anyhow, it's 21 here, and like most Right Thinking People (not right-thinking people), I think it should be lowered to 18. If you can do pretty much any life-changing thing at that age, why can't you drink? It's not THAT big bad a bogeyman. About all the drinking age does currently is make it seem even MORE forbidden and mysterious or whatever, and help lead to excess.

No underage person shall knowingly possess or consume any low-alcohol beverage in any public or private place, unless accompanied by a parent, spouse who is not an underage person, or legal guardian, or unless the low-alcohol beverage is given by a physician in the regular line of the physician's practice or given for established religious purposes.

Interesting -- so if you're 20 and married to a 21-year-old, you can have a beer. That's kind of sane.

Established religious purposes ... hmm ....

At least they closed up the loopholes that could get people prosecuted for, like, giving their children wine in a Catholic service, or the doctor giving them alcoholic meds! That is actually somewhat sane!
