Monday Fun #28: Poll

Yes, that's a different topic than usual. I keep forgetting to do a regular Monday Fun, and both had an idea for a game-related poll and realized it was Monday together, so... here you go.

Note: I do not pretend to be completely unbiased in my questions. Nor do I pretend that this isn't.. um... inspired by anyone. *cough*

(Well, I screwed up the two questions before the final one, they should have been checkboxes... And you apparently can't edit a poll once it's up, and can't have more than one poll in an entry. Or if you can do either I can't figure out how. So skip those questions, I guess.)

Other than the fact that I am an idiot in my poll creating...

Yes, I took my own poll, as usual, since these are to spark discussion etc etc., as well as assuage my curiosity. So the comments:

Yeah, I picked both "awesome" and "alright" for both the 360 and Wii, because I play and enjoy both of them a lot (well, the 360 in cycles), but they both have things I really dislike about them enough to temper that awesomeness severely. With the 360, it's a somewhat lack of the type of games I prefer, and the inanity of a lot of their vocal user-base. But the games that they DO have that are my type of game are awesome, and I love the robustness and sensibleness of X-Box Live, and the Achievements are cool too.

The Wii on the other hand, while I enjoy and play it a lot, and like the *option* of some new control types like motion sensitivity, I could do without *everything* being in that scheme, and every game trying to shoehorn some sort of wand-waving or whatever in. I mean, it's cool in an RPG to be able to swing the controller around like a sword and actually have it Do Shit, but being forced to move the controller and nunchuck around constantly like a maniac to control the game is annoying. Y'know? Plus, they still blow goats with their internet connectivity scheme. Plus plus they have less serious games this time around than I'd like, and while a lot of the niche stuff is great, I could use a bit more variety.

And as for the questions I screwed up asking, I own both handhelds, and play both... although I definitely play the DS a lot more. But I do play both.

And yeah, I'm just curious what everyone has to say.

Also play both handhelds. DS definitely gets more love. I'd LIKE to play the PSP more, but I think Sony has been doing all sorts of bad decisions all over the place.

As I absolutely LOATHED the original X-Box, I remain astonished that its descendant has become The Best System Ever. At least for this gen. Mostly because of how badly PS3 screwed up. Sony, guys, wtf?

Iknorite?

Seriously, I'm totally with you on pretty much everything.

-I dunno if they've had that many bad decisions with the PSP... no wait, I lie. They've had some HORRENDOUS choices of advertising for it, and they don't bring over the games that'd be most totally awesome (the Suikoden I&II ports, ditto the Xenosaga stuff, they could TOTALLY port the Suikoden Gaiden games.. etc etc..), and what's left is mainly... bleh. There are a few jewels, and some other neat enough time-wasters, but it could have been so much more...

-And yes, I was soo disappointed with the original X-Box. I bought it pretty much for Fable, and we all know how THAT little fiasco went. One of the main things that has taught me not to believe all the hype... maybe get somewhat excited about it, but don't just swallow it whole. About the only game I remember playing on it that I actually enjoyed was Jade Empire. (Granted, I didn't play the KotR games which I realize I totally should have, but... oh well.) And yet, the 360 is Made of Awesome. WTF?

-And yes, Sony, WTF? Come on already! The heads are not SUPPOSED to be inserted in the rectum. Certainly not that far. Yeesh!

I was really torn on the 'favorite last-gen console' question, because my absolute favorite game of that generation was KotOR, I'm generally partial to MS, and it had both better hardware and adhered to a design philosophy I'm generally in favor of... but the PS2 had more games I liked (plus I never had an original PlayStation -- I got by mooching off of other people's consoles in that era -- so I caught up on late PS1-era games on my PS2).

I didn't poll, because we only have one of the systems and therefore I don't feel qualified.

I'm a big fan of JRPGs. I like linear storytelling. I'm horrendously disappointed in PS3. We use it mostly to play PS2 games. And occasionally PS1 games. (Yes, we bought with backwards compatibility). There's just nothing I'm interested in for PS3.

I have small hands. I played my brother-in-law's Xbox360 for a few hours over a vacation - and the controller was too heavy, so my hands hurt by the end of the evening in ways they just don't with the sony controllers. Other than that, the 360 just has so many more games with plots in their lineup that I'm so very very tempted. I'm sure I could find some third party controller that didn't break me, right?

Probably! Not sure, I just use the normal one... it doesn't quite hurt my hands, I guess my hands are juuust big enough, despite being female, but yeah, it is a bit awkward.

Because I somehow forgot and missed my chance for maximum troll... I mean... maximum number of choices!

Seriously, I did after I posted the poll (and before you posted this comment) think "doh! I should have included PCs in there somehow, and maybe Macs" but... too late.

Yeah, I kinda separate them in my mind as well, although not quite as much as I used to maybe. But that's probably another big reason why I didn't add 'em.

Wait, we have both PSP and DS! But in general I prefer the DS.

The PS3 is right for me -- hardware backward-compatability with PS2 games, and bluray. However, I've only ever played 3 actual PS3 games on it: Rock Band, Valkyria Chronicles, and Portal. Because of that, I have a hard time recommending this system to anyone else.

(Oh, reesei played Disgaea 3, so I guess that's 4 PS3 games now, in over a year of ownership, and many PS2 games played.)

Didn't they stop backward compatibility on new units a good while ago though? So kinda screws those of us over who don't have one who would consider getting one, as far as that goes.

Yep - that's why khedron jumped on it before there were good PS3 games - to make sure he got a model with the backwards compatibility.

I think it broke his brain a little when the first game I played on the PS3 was FF9. All the way through. But it was pretty on the PS3 and a big TV!

If I were getting a new console now, it wouldn't be a PS3 - there just aren't the games for it. It's very very very sad when the Xbox has more and better RPGs.

Well, they stopped *hardware* compatibility a while ago, which is why I bought mine when I did, when the only PS3 game I had any interest in at all was Rock Band, and I wasn't sure how much interest that was. (Turns out, it's awesome.)

However, they have software compatibility. My understanding is that it works near-perfectly for all PS 1 games, and with less reliability for PS2. Here's Sony's compatibility page, where you plug in your system and a substring for the game title, i.e. you can look up all Final Fantasy games at once.

It looks like FF8 didn't get much love from Sony:
Throughout gameplay, when the user's party encounters a random enemy in the "world map", and the “pre-battle” transition screen appears, approximately 40 - 60% of the “pre-battle” transition screen appears black, and the remaining portion of the screen appears corrupted.

Some issues like this have been resolved by system updates, and the Sony page will say so if they are.

Here's an old blog post showing one guy's hardware vs. software compat. list.

Scarily enough, the PS2 is still selling like hotcakes -- it had a recent price drop, which made it sell more than the PS3 last month. Kinda crazy. Kinda grim, too. But like I said, it was the right choice for me.

All PS3s emulate the PS1 via software, and works just fine.

The original 20GB and 60GB PS3s had full hardware backward compatiblity with the PS2, with both a PS2 CPU and GPU. They run PS2 titles almost perfectly.

The European 60GB PS3 and the first-run 80 GB PS3 had a PS2 GPU, but not a PS2 CPU. They have spotty backward compatibility with PS2 titles.

The 40GB PS3, and the newer 80GB and 160 GB PS3s -- i.e. all the PS3s you can get new now -- have no backward compatiblity with the PS2 at all.

Crud! I had not realized that none of the current ones in production have backward compat. I even looked at the table on Wikipedia, should've spotted that. I just thought it was a low-end vs. high-end thing.

Well, that kinda stinks. My 60 GB, hardware-compat looks like the king of the crop, with its plethora of usb ports and other silly features (like flash reader). Sure, it runs hotter than the new ones are supposed to, but that's what ventilation is for.

Oh well.

Snark accepted. That was the same month that the DS (family) sold more than every single other system accepted, after all. Them's good hotcakes.

Oops. You were totally right, and I was wrong. Wishful thinking on my part? (And no wonder the PS2 is outselling the PS3. :-/ )

The GameCube was giving the PS2 a run for its money for awhile, but then it kind of petered out. The same thing may happen with the Wii eventually, but so far it's far ahead of the PS3. Of course it does also have the unfair advantage that i keep having fun with it playing old GameCube games as well.

Although I still consider myself a gamer, it's pretty sad how few games I actually play these days. The only system I've played more than about 2 games on is the DS, so I guess that's probably my favorite system kinda by default - although I liked the form of the PSP more and I really liked Crisis Core a lot. The only current console system I have is a PS3, which I've been very happy with... but the main things I do are play Rock Band 2 and watch Blu-rays. Since the other consoles can only do half of those things (and the wii does the Rock Band half poorly), the PS3 is the clear winner for my purposes.
