uuurgh..

I have the discs that came with the Dell, but can't seem to find the driver for the unknown ethernet device. How can I figure out wtf card I have? I can't even get the dialup modem to detect a dialtone, so that's out.
If I can figure out what card I have, can I bribe someone with a $5 Amazon credit to send a Cd snail-mai. w/ the drivers I need?

Insert the disc that says Drivers and Utilities, and let it autorun. You can then tell it to install the ethernet driver from the Dell utility.

Of course I do. It's why they pay me ridiculous amounts of cash. I read the manual. It's a rare technical skill.

It's a DELL? Oh, holy fuck, why didn't you SAY so?

(Dell have the best support and the simplest hardware, bar none, in the business. And the best restore disks. Sadly, they have unreliable hardware that means you tend to *need* their support and their hardware help, but, hey, small tradeoff against HAVING EVERYTHING WHEN YOU NEED IT versus NOT HAVING IT *IF* YOU NEED IT)

Also: The dialup modem can't detect a dial tone because the dialup modem needs drivers. Off the utility disk.

Er, yeah. Makes sense now that I think about it... but I was frustrated as hell, which usually lowers my active IQ by about 75% :/
