Also: graphics cards

I'm suspecting that my graphics card may be on its last legs, due to the problems mentioned before, and then earlier today when I got an error message that the graphics accelerator had stopped responding and had to be reset by the driver, which, y'know, doesn't sound good.

So my question is: what's the best type of graphics cards out there? What would y'all suggest? I've never actually bought one separately from a new computer before, so... I'm curious what I should go for.

All of this is dependent on one big factor: what kind of slot is it going in to? All the cards Mike and Kenn have recommended are PCI-x 16 cards. If you're still in AGP land, it's going to limit what you can put in there.

Well, my current card is an ATI Radeon 9800 series. Soo... er... whichever?

Er, oh dear, and it says "chip type AGP" in the diagnostics so... er... ouch?

Urgh. I really don't want a new computer, especially since I just bought a shiny new harddrive less than a year ago.

Shiny new hard disk can go in shiny new computer.

What's the rest of the computer like?

you can't buy a computer without a hard drive,

Weren't you the guy recommending NewEgg a few comments ago?

I wouldn't figure you to be the kind of guy who conflates "can't" with "usually don't want to".

Anyway. There's no reason to waste money spent recently. If the shiny new HDD still had a pile of space, or, better yet, has a pile of useful data, it doesn't hurt to add it on.

500GB, infinite?

*looks at his 1.2TB JBOD setup* Hmm, getting down to 5% free...

Ahh! I guess by "most people", you mean "people who don't download anime in the original raw DVD format"... :)

Heh, well, I guess technically it's "stealing". I prefer to call it "previewing", myself... :)

I fully intend to buy them when they're available in the States, but until then, gotta have the fansubs. Besides, Stormy can vouch for my legally purchased anime collection, she's seen it before, and that was back in college, before I could actually afford to spend on anime. But that's why the gods invented student loans... :)

(BTW, SF, I still have that Serial Experiments Lain lunchbox you got me...)

Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 1 GB RAM.

And yeah, I could USE a new computer, but I don't really have the budget for it at this point in time. Not that I really have the extra budget at the moment for a new graphics card, but that would still at least be the cheaper option.

(Edit: stupid wandering comma. Go where I put you!)

Yeah, if I end up looking at the 200 bucks for a video card options, I might just end up going with the cheapest new computer that runs decently I can get. Really this one's old and needs replaced... it wouldn't be hobbling around even as well as it does if it weren't really high-end when I first got it.

(Also, good lord, that is a slow computer.)

IKR? Luckily PC gaming seems to be dying, so I play more on the consoles lately. :p (Nah, I won't say PC gaming is *completely* dead, just that it's shifting more to the consoles or ported to both, especially the things I really enjoy, and I'm worried less than I used to be about keeping cutting-edge to play.)

Whatever. I can never fucking remember which is the shortened version of PCI Extended (64 bit slot) vs. PCI Express (graphics slot), which is why I don't normally abbreviate them. I do know that if I meet the fucking monkeys responsible for that overlapping naming bullshit, I'm going to pound them until there's nothing left but a thin red paste on the fucking floor (and yeah, I've been bitten by this already once...wanted a 64bit PCI slot riser card for a PE 2850 for an expansion card that required it, and ended up with a riser with a PCI Express slot on it).
