JORDAN: ToM Chapters 42-49 (spoilers)

I must not have had any notes for chapter 41! Or forgotten to note that the chapter changed last time. Oh well!

Hrm, Danelle. I can't remember if she's someone we've "met" before or not! I really should be doing a re-read at some point. -_-

And ah hah, the messenger was killed. Wonder who got him/her?

The Warder bond is awfully convenient for Drama and rescues, isn't it? I mean, we have Elayne bonding Birgitte to save her, Egwene bonding Gawyn ditto, Lan being passed around like a parcel...

I'm curious to see how these rings that Gawyn grabbed are going to be used! Because you know they will be.

And speaking of Lan and his bond, apparently he is aware now that Nynaeve has it, although it was more a matter of slow realization than immediate recognition at the moment it was passed. Which seems a bit weird! I mean, if you were linked to someone and suddenly linked to a different mind entirely, it would seem the sort of thing you'd realize!

Oooo, the notes about Alliandre being in over her head and all make me wonder if she's the Super Secret Darkfriend that is Graendal's ace in the hole. I can't remember if we've seen anything previously that would mark her as *not* being a Darkfriend.

And oh FFS. Now *Lini* is going to be the one to bully them into marriage. And they're going along with it! Argh argh argh.

And another red-sealed letter, this one for... Galad? o_O I believe Mat's letter from Verin was sealed in red, and Rand got one, now Galad? Now I want to know what the damn things say!

Hah, Mat + Perrin! Yay! It's been HOW long since we've seen some of the Ta'veren together? (In a tavern, no less!)

And speaking of taverns, anyone else catch the quick reference to "easing the badger"?

With talk of how to handle Cairhien, and also talk of what to do with Morgase, anyone else figure she'll end up being made Cairhien's queen, or at least regent? She renounced the Andor throne, but not any others, and it would make use of her queenliness...

And wow, back to the Black Tower! Been a while.

I wonder where Logain is. At any rate, the divisions are certainly... notable. I also wonder what's going on with Taim's "private lessons" *wink wink* I mean, it sounds like it's making Channelers stronger. But I also suspect they might be using the circles of Aes Sedai/Fades to bring others to the Shadow, since it sounds like some of Logain's ex-supporters are now among them.

A creative use of Gateways! Using an ancient Traveling technique to cut leather. Huh.

I also note the quick mention of how the training would let Asha'man "reduce city walls to rubble," which I wonder if it's a hint that yes, some of the Black Tower were used to attack that city in Saldea. (Not that we're really spoiled for choice here for male channelers...)

And damnit, stop introducing new people for us to wonder about their origins. Androl is obviously somebody, the way he slips up and gives hints of his past then tries not to say too much. And what's going on with Nalaam and his occasional slips into wierd languages? Just garden-variety Madness, or what?

The bit about Perrin's Asha'man not being able to Travel to the Black Tower is... interesting. Moridin had a second Dreamspike IIRC, and in Mesaana's POV she thought something along the lines of only "allowed" portals being used to access the area under one, so... I'm assuming that there's a Dreamspike set up around the Black Tower, and only Taim's Asha'man are being allowed in and out via Gateway.

Tuon is just... ugh. The more we see of her as Empress, the less I like her, despite starting to enjoy her when she was with Mat. I'd really like to see someone collar *her* as damane (maybe one of the Forsaken) and give her a taste of what it's like for a change. Maybe she'd learn something.

Man, Elaida's not taking well to captivity, huh? Not that I guess we could expect much more from her at this point. She started out seeming like she was strong but just misguided, but this... blah.

Now I'm wondering what the deal with the "Happy Throng" is, since we seem to have our attention called to the name and its origin. Hard to tell.

"Master Crimson" and "Master Golden"? How about Mister Black, Mister White...?

And back to Rhuidean. Ah, Aviendha always leaping before you look. Or think.

I twigged onto the fact that they were looking into the future (or a possible future) just at the start of the third one, right before it was revealed in the text. That's always a let-down! It's like "Ah hah!" and then the text points it out and it's like "gah, I knew that! Briefly..." *ahem* anyhow...

I guess this is more confirmation that the points of view in the Rhuidean pillars are linked to someone's bloodline.

Twins for Elayne and Quads for Aviendha? Sheesh, Rand's seed is dangerous, y'all!

I'm assuming that this is just a possible future, since it'd be too damn depressing, otherwise! And I'm hoping it's at least made clear in the text somewhere that this has been averted, because ow!

And I've got one simple way for you to avoid that future Avi... DON'T HAVE SEX WITH RAND AGAIN. Although IIRC Min saw something about kids for Avi that she'd have with Rand, and her viewings are more concrete, so I'm assuming she's not going to take that option. Blah.

Almost... done...!

Hmm...is this where we put jokes about "Master Pink," then?

anyone else catch the quick reference to "easing the badger"?

...I laughed, I admit.

Re: Lan's bond: This is one of the few cases of "didn't do fact-cheking by looking at teh relevant page of the earllier book." Within the hour of Moiraine's through-the-doorway trip, Lan knew someone else had her bond, and could "feel her, somewhere in the West." Maybe that was because Moiraine's bond was cut with such a sudden force and Lan sensed something else appearing in its place immediately, but still...

(The other case of "didn't do fact checking" was "sun-haired Alliandre" during the first parley. No. Look at her first description, in the Fires of Heaven.)

I like the Gateway-cutter.

Tuon---you and me both, sister.

Danelle reminder

Lan's bond... I'd expect him to know that it was passed, but I wouldn't expect him to immediate recognize the new holder.

Yeah, that annoyed me a fair bit. Have some respect for your audience!

I mean, yeah, but at the same time, I find it impossible to imagine that scene written without Aviendha at some point realizing what was going on, and you kind of have to have her say she realized it, or the story doesn't work. Is there a way around this that I'm missing? Or am I just not understanding the complaint correctly?

I think it would have been better if he hadn't belabored the point. "She was not seeing the deep past of her people. She was seeing their future" was fine. The paragraph after that was what made it seem like he was talking down to his audience, in my view.

I complimented Brandon (at the Dallas signing) regarding the badger line. He said that he put the badger in the bag for Mat and wrote the resultant scene around it. He also said Harriet was the one responsible for the call back line of Perrin letting it out of the bag.

She said as soon as she read what Brandon wrote, she couldn't help but add that last line of Perrin's. She also said this with a HUGE smile on her face.
